The Asian LGBTI world is growing at record pace. But this development hasn’t
happened by accident. It’s the result of tireless work by an army of
dedicated heroes, many of them volunteers.
Now ELEMENT Magazine – dedicated to gay men in Asia – has decided to
celebrate its first anniversary by recognizing some of those champions.
Its inaugural Asia Pink Awards celebrates some of the individuals and
champions who are helping make the continent a better place for all LGBTI
people.
Hiro Mizuhara, aassociate publisher of ELEMENT Magazine and chair of the
judging panel, told GSN: ‘While there are similar initiatives in the western
hemisphere, the Asia Pink Awards is concerned with a region spanning
countries that are culturally and politically separate.
‘Each of our nominees work in their separate communities to advance the gay
rights movement, and yet for the most part, people outside of Chinese
speaking countries have no idea who A-Mei is and people outside of Laos do
not know of Anan Bouapha.
‘We hope the platform can get gay people in Singapore to be inspired by
Ishikawa-san, and gay people in India can get inspired by Bryan Choong.’
Gay Star News is supporting the awards and will be joining the judging panel
along with a host of Asian LGBTI experts.
Here are the nominees:
Individuals
A-Mei
A singer based in Taiwan who has been an outspoken supporter of gay rights.
In 2013 she held a free concert in support of same-sex marriage and is a
signatory to the petition for legalizing gay and lesbian marriage in Taiwan.
