Program Note
On Shoying’s 70th birthday, her long-lost husband Bochang returns home,
dead. Shoying has no intention of postponing a birthday party with her three
daughters and their families; however, she wants to save face by holding a
decent funeral for Bochang. Bochang had been living in Taipei with another
woman, Tsai, and converted to Buddhism. His death and the presence of a woman
who stayed with him at his deathbed feel like a sharp flint thrown at Shoying
and her daughters as they face the truth they thought they knew but didn’t
know—truth that had been hidden because of a close relationship. Little Big
Women is a mourning diary of a mother and her daughters who gain closure.
